Surviving the Side Hustle
From Football Captain to Energy Coach: Mo's Journey Empowering Others
We all carry energy that either drains us or fuels us forward - but how aware are you of which energy you're bringing to your leadership and life? Coach Mo joins us for a powerful exploration of energy leadership that will transform how you view your daily challenges.
A former college football captain turned core energy leadership coach, Mo shares his journey from team leadership on the field to helping executives and managers break through their internal barriers. He reveals the fundamental distinction between catabolic energy (that feeling of being weighed down, frustrated, or stuck) and anabolic energy (the excited, motivated state where possibilities open up).
What makes this conversation particularly valuable is Mo's insight that draining energy isn't always negative. He candidly shares how he channeled the catabolic energy from his absent father into motivation that drove his success. The key lies in awareness - recognizing what energy you're bringing to any situation and understanding you have the power of choice to shift it.
The most compelling moment comes when Mo reveals his own transformation after being laid off following his first wedding anniversary. This pivotal experience introduced him to coaching and taught him that self-awareness creates choice, and choice creates freedom. Now he helps leaders develop this same awareness through a comprehensive assessment that identifies precisely what's holding them back.

what's going on everybody today on this show I've got coach mo and we have got an exciting, energy filled uh episode for you guys. Coach man, it is great to connect with you. Recently it was on your show. We had a great episode, very powerful. I'm amped to have you because I know you're going to bring the energy. So so, coach Mo, how are you doing? Dude?
Speaker 2:Man, I'm awesome, rob, Thanks for having me. It's a privilege to be here. We had a great time on the let's Think About it podcast and happy to be here on Surviving the Hustle.
Speaker 1:Yeah Well, let's dive right into it, shall we? Would you mind sharing a little bit about who you are and who you help, kind of thing?
Speaker 2:Yeah, man, I'm Coach Mo. I'm here in the Sacramento, california area. I've been a coach for man, I would say like five years, accredited coach, but I've been a lifelong journey coach and what that's saying is what I mean by that is, I've always had a passion and joy for helping people basically get out of their own damn way right, and I've done that from a time, you know, from when I was in college up until you know now. But when you look at my career and how I got into coaching, I want to say about five years ago I went and I, you know, pursued getting accredited. But my background really aligns with HR management, leadership, staff development and then being a college professor teaching young college students, always helping and mentoring and counseling. But I just never had that how to take them from point A to point Z, how to take them from point A to point Z. And so that's where coaching kind of came in to kind of help me connect the dots, to help people elevate and grow and become better versions of themselves.
Speaker 1:Oh, I love that and I know a little bit about you with your background with football and how that kind of brought you into the whole leadership kind of world. Would you mind sharing a little bit about that?
Speaker 2:Absolutely, man.
Speaker 2:When you talk about leadership, I think for me it started in sports.
Speaker 2:It started playing college football at UC Davis here near the Sacramento region, and I was a team captain region and I was a team captain.
Speaker 2:And being a team captain, it's really important that you model the way for the rest of the team members and showing up every single day, working out, being an example, being true and dedicated athlete, not just on the field but also in the classroom. That just really carried over into my professional life. And so I remember getting my first job, or my leadership job at Foot Locker locker, and those traits was very evident because I would show up modeling the way and exemplifying organizational skills, the different types of leadership traits, communication, all of those different things that you need into managing a team, which I did on the football field and being a captain and communicating, leading the guys on the field as well. So that kind of carried over and you just grow and you grow and as you grow as a leader you learn different ways to approach different scenarios. And so when I got introduced to coaching, I really embraced the opportunity to take people to a different level from a coaching perspective.
Speaker 1:Yeah, and I love that. I consider myself also a lifelong learner, always looking for new challenges and ways to kind of expand myself and as just continue to see. That show up day in, day out with my clients and different things that I'm doing. And I understand that a huge component of your coaching is energy coaching. Can you explain a little bit about energy coaching, how that plays a role in leadership and how you even got started with that whole realm?
Speaker 2:and how you even got started with that whole realm. Absolutely, man, I consider myself a core energy leadership coach, and so what that means is you got to lead self before you can lead others first, right, and we're all energy beings. And how that really breaks down, right, is you got this times when you feel drained, right, where it just feels like this dark cloud or the weight is just on your shoulders and you just naturally feel drained. So that type of energy is characterized as catabolic energy. And then you have this fueling type energy, like you just excited, you ready to make some shit happen, you, you, you're in the flow, you're in the zone. Right, that's antibiotic energy.
Speaker 2:Ok, so both of those energies is tied to emotions. So think of those energies is tied to emotions. So think of it like this when you're sad, you're feeling frustrated, you're irritated, you're annoyed, you're feeling hopeless, you're afraid, you're stressed, you're depressed, all of that is characterized as this draining type energy, which we would call catabolic energy. Think about when you're happy, you're joyful, you feel love, you feel synergized, you feel connected, you feel happy, that's characterized as antibiotic energy. So, ultimately, I help people create better self-awareness around the energy that's present in certain moments throughout the day, right, and so take it. Here's an example. And this is how energy works. You're driving to work, you're excited about having a good day. No-transcript that that catabolic energy is present. At that moment, you have power of choice in how you can reduce it, and then, when you reduce it, you naturally feel better.
Speaker 1:So that has me thinking is the catabolic energy a negative thing, or is it just another half of the coin? Is there a benefit to having that kind of catabolic?
Speaker 2:energy. I wouldn't characterize it as being negative, right, because it can be a benefit to you, right, it can be a benefit to you, right. It can be the driving force to complete a deadline, because draining is draining energy, right. And when you have to force, like, get through this deadline every single moment and you're pushing and you're pushing and you're pushing, it's draining, it's draining right. And typically when you're trying to push through a deadline, there may be some worry, that's present, but you need that push to get through the deadline, right, so that's not negative. For example here's another example I carried a lot wasn't around in my life, right, so I used that anger that my dad wasn't present as a force to make me successful A lot of catabolic energy.
Speaker 2:I got to do this I need to do this because I don't want to be that but it wasn't negative, it was a positive for me because it rose me out of my circumstance, from the environment that I was in. Wouldn't characterize it as negative or positive, it's just is. It's just this draining energy that you feel. And when you feel that energy that's draining you, how do you move from it? How long are you holding it for? Right, and most of us can carry that for weeks, months, and most of us can carry that for weeks, months, maybe a day, maybe a couple of minutes.
Speaker 1:It's just having that awareness to move away from it. Yeah, I love that because I'm huge on awareness. I pretty much have awareness tied to all six of the principles that I teach in my coaching and on stage and things. So I got to ask where did you first develop the awareness of these types of energies? Because it didn't just appear to you one day. There had to have been some kind of exposure that you learned about this and started to realize like, oh wow, that's what this is, and so on.
Speaker 2:Man initially, I remember first being coached right and I me it was like my first year after being married and I remember me and my wife going our honeymoon not honeymoon, but our first year anniversary right, wife going our, our honey not honeymoon, but our, our first year anniversary Right. And I come back that Monday I get the pink slip, I got laid off on my job, right, and that and it messed me up, bad bro, because I never been laid off. I show up, I met her but somehow she was coaching me and this is when I was first introduced to coaching, and this had to be about 14 years ago, 15 years ago, something around that time and she shifted my energy because I was in this funk, I was in this rut, I was carrying all of this self-pity, I'm not good enough. That inner critic is just consistently chirping in my ear telling me, telling myself, that I'm not good enough because of this event. That's happened for me, Right. And and what she did is she helped shift my energy to a more opportunistic viewpoint of the situation. But I needed that positive reassurance of a third party person which happened to be the coach at the time to like really shift that.
Speaker 2:But at that moment 15 years ago, I couldn't identify what my energy was and it was just in that moment. There was no choice. I felt I had no choice but to be down and pity on myself. In that moment, going through coaching and the experience of it implement, going through coaching and the experience of it, it really helped me understand the power of choice and whenever you are in your life when you understand that you have power of choice, your energy instantly shifts right. You carry that catabolic energy a lot of times because of certain traits like limiting beliefs can be present, an assumption can be present, an interpretation can be present in your mind without you really knowing and aware that it's there. But that's what's creating this draining type energy that you feel Right. And so I think that was the first time I kind of I wouldn't characterize it as energy, though back then sad pity of myself to move toward man.
Speaker 1:I can conquer the world after working with this after working with this particular coach, wow, yeah Well, I'm sorry to hear about that situation, um, but I'm kind of glad that it did happen, because now you're making such a amazing impact on so many other people's lives. And that is crazy, because I was just having a conversation with my mentor and he was encouraging me to read up on these three versions of ourselves. Everybody has the actual self and that's your current understanding of all the attributes and traits and characteristics of yourself. And then there are also two other selves the ideal self this is what you really want to be like. And then there are also two other selves. The ideal self this is what you really want to be like. And then there's the ought self, which is what you ought to be like, and that's kind of set by societal norms and things like that.
Speaker 1:And the further that your actual self is from those to the ideal self and the ought self, that's where things like anxiety and depression and sadness and a lot of these, I guess, negative attributes or feelings kind of creep in. And he says he was telling me the research is you got to bring yourself back and ways you can do that is like reframing certain expectations and outcomes and things like that and it sounds like you were really tied to that job and those expectations and that ought self. And then sounds like you were really tied to that job and those expectations and that ought self. And then when you got laid off, that really created that massive separation which brought that inflow of energy to you. And then when this coach, who just happened to pop in at the perfect timing, she helped shine awareness onto that and help you kind of reframe your life really and get through things. So that's a crazy how I love that, because your story literally lines up with what I've been reading about just recently. So I love that. I love that story.
Speaker 2:Yep, yep, and I think, at the end of the day, in the simplest form, if you can create more intentions for yourself, the better you'll feel. It's that simple, right, but it's hard. It's simple but it's hard, right, it's easier said than done. Are very reactive to the things that are in your environment. That's what causes the draining type energy that you experience. Right, and mentioning, like the limiting belief, a certain stereotype.
Speaker 1:Thank you, you, yeah, I love that, I love, uh, I love obviously the awareness aspect of it all, um, and so I gotta, I gotta ask you now what? Who are the typical people that you're working with, uh, with the energy, coaching and leadership type stuff? Are you working with other entrepreneurs? You're working with no-transcript.
Speaker 1:Thank you Hmm wow, that's some powerful stuff. That's uh digging deep. You're helping helping these guys out and I can. I can see how that's really beneficial, because that's where I dive into is. I love learning more self-awareness, reading into myself and how I react in different situations and such, and I can see how working with you and those questions there really helps a lot.
Speaker 1:And that's only scratching the surface of things, but I know we're kind of short on time here, so I wanted to jump right in and to ask him are you taking on additional external clients at this time? Where do people find out more questions? Or how do people find out more about those 50 or so questions? Do you offer those to certain individuals that you're working with to kind of no-transcript? If you're interested in hearing more or checking it out, just reach out to him on social media LinkedIn and Instagram both best places to kind of contact him and his website too of best places to kind of contact him, and his website too, of course and then and ask for that assessment, get that insight, because, as we were sharing earlier, how important that awareness is, that awareness component really dictates how you can change and better your situation so you can hopefully overcome whatever kind of obstacles you're dealing with at the time. So, coach Mel, before I let you roll, dude, I got to ask you what would be your number one piece of advice to someone who's kind of jumping out in that world and getting things rolling. What would be your advice to them to not only survive but to thrive in the entrepreneurial leadership world?
Speaker 1:Thank you, amen, amen. I love it. Powerful stuff, coach Mo. Thank you again so much for taking the time today. It's been a pleasure, looking forward to connecting with you again in the future. My man, thank you, thank you, thank you, all right guys. That's all we have today. Peace, peace, peace.
